The Scian Melt #11

The past couple of weeks have seen a lot of happenings in the Indian blogosphere.

Selva and Prashant discussed the question "Do we have the Cultural capital to win the Nobel Prize?". Very relevant discussion considering the fact the three of the Nobel nominees from India are residing abroad and pursuing their research outside of India. The Indian National Academy of Science has published a book "Pursuit and Promotion of Science: The Indian Experience" (400 pages). It might be a good one to download and read.

Sunil's third volume of Everything Scientific covers topics ranging from sonic booms, hurricanes and climate change, how salt on the road during winter months has affected the salinity of the fresh water bodies and the (mis) management of India's biodiversity. It is a very interesting coverage of the recent happenings in the scientific world.

Now moving on to some very 'physics' posts. Venkat writes about "The development of Quantum Mechanics" with a historical perspective. It is a very comprehensive look at the contributors to quantum physics. Selva deals with the question "Can objects travel at the speed of light?" with very little math and a lot of humor. If all that was not enough physics to satisfy your soul you can read up on Quantum Quandary and Photoelectric Effect right here. The Scian also had a post called "Does the Universe care about us?" where is deals with personal Gods and their lack of interest in providing us with life-time supply of clean energy.

Suresh writes about Priority Sampling. Prashant nominated this post. I spent sometime on it and I don't understand it that well. If you do, then have fun reading it.

We have all heard of 'Bose' speakers, A/V receivers etc. Have you ever wondered who 'Bose' was? I didn't know anything about 'Bose' until I read this article by I R Sharma on Drishtikona. Another interesting post on India is by Prof Madhukar Shukla who writes about "Visible and Invisible India". It gives you some very neat perspective about the two Indias that exist side by side. Amardeep Singh gives a very comprehensive look at the Conference on South Asia 2005.

It is common knowledge that most people in Tamil Nadu buy processed drinking water. Nobody dares to drink the corporation supplied water. People have accepted buying drinking water as a norm. Varnam writes about the quest for clean water in Tamil Nadu and how Tirupur ( the t-shirt capital of India) is using a private sector plant to process its water supply, which is the first of its kind.

Indian made foreign books is the title under which Abinandanan discusses the issue of sky rokecting text book prices and the option of buying Indian edition of foreign books.

Moving on to controversies. There were two that I know of, that had many Indian bloggers typing away at 'warp speed'. One was the episode of 'Moral Policing in Chennai'. If you missed out on it, you can read a range of reactions from Charu, Kaps- 1, 2, 3 and Selective Amnesia. The second controversy that hit Indian bloggers was that of IIPM targeting Rashmi and Gaurav for writing about its tall claims. You can read all about it at Desipundit.

Finally in the News - Nobel Prizes for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and in many other fields were announced this past fortnight. And some Ig Nobel awards were also given out.

That is it for this edition of Scian Melt. Thanks for all the nominations. Have fun reading. If you want to host a future melt please email Selva at melt[at]thescian[dot]com.
